PUTRAJAYA (May 4, 2011): Former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad has described the US as being “uncivilised” in killing Al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden during a shootout in Pakistan on Sunday.
“He is indeed guilty, but to send a team to kill someone, that is not the way to enforce the law. If you can catch him, catch him.
“But instead, you encroach there, with him (Osama) being unarmed, killed him, then put him in the sea. To me this is like being uncivilised people,” he said here today.
Mahathir said this when asked whether he think it was right for the US to kill Osama and whether the authorities should instead bring him to court.
He was speaking to reporters after presenting prizes to winners of the Perdana Leadership Foundation-MPH “Nurturing the minds of future leaders” essay competition 2010.
Mahathir said although Osama has been killed, the incident could possibly lead to more anger and more violent actions from amongst the people or his followers.
“Perhaps now they tone down for a while as they have lost their leader. But in the end, they will react. This is not a way to curb violence. This is actually revenge.
“Revenge by the US for the Sept 11 attack,” he said, referring to the coordinated attacks by Al Qaeda in 2001 whereby two hijacked airlines crashed into the Twin Towers of the World Trade Centre in New York, killing 2,752 people.
He was also asked whether Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Abdul Razak’s call for the Chinese to support Barisan Nasional or risk losing representation in the government is a cause of worry to the community.
To this, he said: “It is a cause of worry for the whole nation. Once we divide ourselves into Chinese and Malays, and we fight each other, that’s the end of cooperation and there will be no stability in this country.”
Meanwhile, the grand prize winner of the essay competition was Eric Lee Vui Loong of HELP University College, followed by Koh Aun Qi of University of Sydney (1st prize), Calvin Lee Eng Siong of Sunway University College (2nd prize) and Chua Jack Yune also of HELP (3rd prize).
