Builders against Kedah plan
ALOR STAR: Kedah Real Estate and Housing Developers' Association (Rehda) is opposed to a proposed new housing policy which would require builders to provide 60 per cent of their total number of units as affordable housing.
Its chairman, Rick Cheng Wooi Seong, described it as unfriendly to developers and that it had bad implications on the housing sector in the state.
Cheng feared the prices of houses would skyrocket due to shortage in supply if the new policy was enforced.
Cheng was asked to comment on the new policy, expected to be tabled at the next state assembly later this month.
Under the new policy, the state government would decide the prices of these affordable housing units while developers could only determine the prices of the remaining units.
Cheng said the association had only learnt about the proposed policy last week and was only given a week to discuss the matter among its members.
State Gerakan Youth chief Tan Keng Liang said the Pas-led state government was shirking its responsibilities to provide adequate housing for the poor and passing the buck to housing developers.
